I've never listened to your work, but it is a fair question. I'm sure a lot of listeners don't even consider what goes into the production, so long as it sounds good.
But based on what you've described in your post here, I think you're definitely on the right track... no pun intended.

Well...I'd have to agree to the bit about the listeners not considering the effort in the production. People seem to give more attention to the music part (the melody, the riff, etc.) of a music, but not the finer details of it. I often pay attention the finer details, hoping that some of my knowledge would help connect the dots of why something sound the way they sound.

And what do you mean by me being on the right track? Are you referring to the fact that I'm questioning my method of working, and asking for opinions or something else?
